A new baby black rhino orphan has fortunately found her way to the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary! A rare and beautiful baby girl, the task has called for seasoned black rhino whisperer, caregiver Lucas to step in and make sure she feels at home.
South Africa (23 August 2024) — Last week, the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared the bittersweet news that a new baby rhino orphan had been taken into their care. A member of the critically endangered black rhino family, the sweet and very special little girl was taken into their ICU, where her health would be monitored.
The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared that the 3-month-old girl had been under round-the-clock care since her arrival, but showed hopeful signs of strength, stability and a serious love of milk.
After her desensitising blindfold and earplugs were removed, it was time for the little rhino calf to begin the next phase of her journey at the Sanctuary. But, she needed a little help from a top-tier caregiver to do this—enter caregiver Lucas, the ‘Black Rhino Whisperer’!
As the Sanctuary shares:
“Black rhinos are considerably different in personality, temperament, and behaviour compared to white rhinos. These differences are particularly noticeable in small calves, which means that the care and rehabilitation program for a black rhino is quite different from that of a white rhino.
“This is why we called in our resident black rhino calf expert, Caregiver Lucas!”
Lucas is said to be a seasoned caregiver with a knack for creating bonds with black rhino calves, who tend to be particularly loyal to a single caregiver. Thanks to his special touch, other black rhino calves like Swazi have been able to be re-wilded and released.
“Lucas has a magical way with these little calves, and we are so grateful that he is here to help this new little one on her journey.”
With Lucas on the case, hopes are very high for the new rhino orphan will settle down in no time and have the most gentle path to a hopeful future.
