The Uitenhage SPCA faced a major setback when devastating floods washed away Cuyler Bridge, their primary access point to the community that supports them most. After weeks of isolation and hardship, the bridge has been rebuilt and hope has been restored for the many animals in their care in need of a forever home.
Uitenhage, South Africa (12 December 2024) – In October this year, devastating floods washed away Cuyler Bridge which was a main access point, cutting off the Uitenhage SPCA from the community that supports its invaluable work.
This isolated the shelter, hindering donations and adoptions plummeted. For weeks, the animals endured isolation, longing for human interaction and loving homes.
“For weeks, the only way to reach us was a dangerous detour, leaving many of our beloved cats and dogs waiting months for visitors, let alone a forever home,” shares the SPCA.
But yesterday, the animal welfare team got to finally breathe a sigh of relief and was filled with joy at the announcement that the bridge has been rebuilt, and all clear for traffic.
“We are finally back in action! Yet, the journey isn’t over for our animals. Many have been waiting far too long for a loving home, and with Christmas just around the corner, we dream of seeing them curled up under a tree with a family to call their own.”
