Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Inspector Ayanda Ngcofe immediately intervened after learning about a pony forced to bear the unimaginable burden of a broken-down car, with passengers!
Cape Town, South Africa (25 February 2025) – Shu, some animals have it really hard out there. It’s utterly dumbfounding to hear stories of the harsh circumstances and conditions some innocent and defenceless creatures are forced to endure, all because they cannot speak up for themselves.
One such heartbreaking discovery, that is enough to pierce into the heart of just about anyone, is that of a sweet pony who had been discovered buckling under a load too heavy to cart. Not just any load – an entire car!
Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Inspector Ayanda Ngcofe didn’t hesitate to intervene as soon as she witnessed this pony’s heartbreaking burden.
“Not only had the pony been forced to cart a broken vehicle without an engine, but four passengers had also sat inside it!
“This absurdly heavy load pushed against the pony’s hindquarters and she had struggled with every step,” the SPCA revealed.
Inspector Ngcofe called the SPCA’s Horse Care Unit for help in transporting the lame and distressed pony to safety at the SPCA.
An equine specialist veterinarian confirmed the pony’s physical inability to pull such a load – a 990kgs vehicle (without the four occupants).
The four occupants of the cart face animal cruelty charges, and the pony is now in the safe care of the SPCA’s Horse Care Unit.
She is finally living a life of ease and care, and our hearts are warmed that she gets to experience what being a pony should actually be like, instead of being a mistreated heavy-load puller.
We salute the amazing animal welfare advocates who acted fast when they saw this pony’s inhumane conditions and fearlessly brought her justice, likely saving other animals from a similar fate.
