A touching story of community spirit emerged in Pacaltsdorp when a mare was discovered lying down helplessly with her foal beside her. The Garden Route SPCA, along with local firefighters and rescuers, quickly sprang into action to safely transport the mare and her foal to the SPCA, where they are receiving essential care.
George, South Africa (12 November 2024) – The animal heroes of Garden Route SPCA didn’t hesitate to respond to a call about a distressed mare in Pacaltsdorp who was found lying helplessly on the ground, unable to stand while her young foal stood by her side – a picture of vulnerability.
But hope for this momma mare was not lost. Field officers rushed to the scene and discovered that due to her extended time lying down, she was unable to get up on her own, suffering from uncomfortable numbness.
“With immense teamwork from our staff and veterinary team, the owner, as well as community members, we managed to move the mare into our horse box and safely transported her and her foal to the SPCA for care,” the SPCA said.
With the assistance of the local firefighters from the Garden Route District Fire Department and Rescue Team as well as Gee Swart from EDR Rescue, the team managed to get the mare to a standing position.
After many massages and gentle encouragement, this brave mare finally stood on her own. Now, safe in the care of the SPCA, the mare and her foal are on the road to recovery, receiving much-needed TLC.
However, the road ahead is long and costly. The Garden Route SPCA team could do really with the help and support of the greater public to cover the costs of her food and milk for her foal to provide the nourishment they need.
