Orcas

The Simon’s Town Boat Company was out on the ocean near False Bay when a pod of about 10 Orcas surfaced. They captured some amazing images of the sighting.

Orcas or more commonly known as Killer Whales, are a popular sighting off the Western Cape coastline, especially in recent years. Just last year a surge of great white carcases were found all missing their large fatty livers. This was an indication that Orcas were hunting the powerful and sometimes frightening great whites.

Last year it was noticed that there was a dip in shark sightings during that time, many thought the Orcas presence had something to do with it. But this latest sighting didn’t deter the sharks within the area.

“Our fabulous ORCA friends back in False Bay this morning! About 10 animals with a few familiar dorsal fins amongst them, including the notorious “Port”; the alleged shark killer! But they clearly weren’t on his menu today as the shark operators reported good sightings.”

“It appears as if the orca were talking to fish as they spent very little time on the surface, but for a period of almost 20 minutes, 3 of them tailed & swam alongside 2 Bryde’s whales, who were clearly fazed by their presence, but the orca made no attempt at a predation.”

“What added to this amazing experience was the presence of 2 very young calves in the pod.
Happy days!”

Orcas have been becoming a regular sighting in recent years. Perhaps they are seeking out new feeding grounds. We will have to wait for the scientists to do studies and release their finding before we know for sure. Until then, we can speculate and just enjoy the sightings as they come.
