Khayelitsha, South Africa (27 September 2024) — Khayelitsha-based Mdzananda Clinic recently welcomed a visit from the ‘big dogs’ after the City of Cape Town’s Alderman JP Smith popped in to see the clinic’s critical work for animals firsthand (and gave them a stamp of approval).

Mdzananda is a place of miracles for many community pets in Khayelitsha; offering a myriad of services from medical care (including medical care on the go thanks to their mobile clinics and animal ambulance), educational programmes that better equip the community to care for pets and temporary homes to the animals.

As the only veterinary health care service and shelter in the vast Khayelitsha community (where around 300,000 companion animals live), the Clinic’s services aren’t just helpful, but essential.

“One is humbled when you get to a place like Mdzananda. Like many animal welfare organisations, they have to perform miracles every day with very limited resources. For the last 28 years, they have served a very large area with big needs. Over time, they have added bit by bit to their facilities and services they offer the residents of Khayelitsha,” remarks Alderman JP Smith.

During his tour, Alderman Smith got the see their consulting rooms, cat ward, shelter, hospital and operating theatre as well as many of the homeless puppies and dogs.

“I was excited to hear of their vision for rebuilding this collection of structures into an animal clinic they can be proud of, and I will do whatever I can to help them achieve this.”

“Please consider giving your support, whether financially with donations in kind, or by adopting one of the 48 dogs and many cars in their shelter,” Alderman Smith urged, giving the clinic stamp of approval.

“We were absolutely thrilled to receive Alderman Smith’s valuable time to host him at our facility,” shared Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive. “And the dogs loved giving him slobbery kisses!”

Having a government official’s support is a big deal for any organisation and for Mdzananda, it will hopefully guide their vision to come to fruition.

Meanwhile in other ways to support the charity, you can also support Mdzananda by supporting their #RunForRescues at the Cape Town marathon, which you can learn more about here.
