Ralph the Greater Cane Rat was taken to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital where he has since doubled in size and is ready to go back to the wild.

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 October 2023) – Ralph the Greater Cane Rat has fans of the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital feeling total delight as he chews his way through his delicious grasses. His cute chubby face has doubled in size since his arrival at the vet and now he is almost ready to go back to the wild.

According to the team, Ralph was brought in by the Brakpan SPCA after being found and thanks to a healthy diet, he has recovered well.

“A young Greater cane rat (Thryonomys swinderianus) was recently dropped off at the Brakpan SPCA. This little wildling is FULL of personality and spunk. Since arriving at the end of August, he has almost doubled in size! Enjoying a little sugar cane, mielie or sweet potato, a primary source of food for cane rats includes grasses.
Currently Ralph enjoys the roots of Kikuyu grass, as well as chomping on Star grass too.

We are currently finalising a release spot for little Ralph, where he will be safe. Cane rats are often eaten as a delicacy, and many succumb to demise after being found enjoying commercial crops – particularly sugar cane.”

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital treats indigenous animals free of charge, relying solely on donations and support from the community.
