The newest resident at the Zululand Conservation Trust just had his very first day out in the sun, and he didn’t waste a single second!
Zululand, South Africa (09 March 2026) – Small in size but full of fight, a tiny white rhino calf arrived in the warm embrace of the Zululand Conservation Trust (ZCT) last week.
The team stepped in after he was sadly abandoned by his mother, who had apparently stopped responding to his calls one day after birth and was no longer providing the milk he needed to survive.
“At such a young age, he simply can’t survive alone. To keep him safe during transport, he rode in the back of a bakkie because we needed eyes on him every second of the journey,” ZCT shared.
After a very long journey on the road to get to the rhino orphanage, the little guy was weighed before being settled in. He’s been recuperating under the watchful eye of the rehabilitation team, and yesterday marked his very first time outside since his arrival!
He was encouraged to rise and shine out of the sleeping pen and move around outdoors, and what an adorable sight it was! Captured on video, the calf was running and galloping about as the team motivated him a little to show him it’s safe and fun.
“It didn’t take long before the tiny tank discovered his legs… and suddenly it was full-on zoomies!”
Seeing this playful side is a great sign, the team said.
“It means he’s starting to feel safe, strong, and comfortable in his new environment. And when a tiny rhino decides it’s time to run… you run with him!”
This tiny tank may have had a rough start following his abandonment in the wild, but if his uplifted spirits and the meticulous care of the conservation trust are anything to go by, we think he’ll be just fine.
The online community was just as touched by his story, with several people admiring his development and the wildlife team responsible for it.
“Wonderful work you are doing. He is one happy little rhino,” Antionette Odendaal commented on the adorable video post.
Established in 2011, the Zululand Conservation Trust has been growing and expanding its reach in the Zululand region for well over a decade. For the wildlife team that runs it, conservation is more than just a passion or a calling. It is a way of life. They are dedicated to sustaining the land and conserving endangered species while uplifting local communities through partnerships, projects, and programmes.
