Responding to a crucial tip-off about suspected illegal wildlife traders, the SPCA Rustenburg Inspectorate team rushed to the scene, where their instincts kicked in and one precious tortoise was saved from a despicable fate.

Rustenburg, South Africa (26 June 2025) – A tortoise has been rescued from a cruel and illegal fate thanks to a lifesaving tip-off and the tireless efforts of the SPCA Rustenburg Inspectorate team.

In what unfolded as a nail-biting sting operation, one of the SPCA’s inspectors rushed to the R556 crossing on Sunday after being informed about suspected illegal wildlife trade taking place in the area, specifically, the sale of tortoises.

Upon arrival, individuals were spotted selling tortoises for an outrageous amount.

“That’s when instincts kicked in — the bakkie door swung open, and in one swift move, our Inspector intervened and managed to rescue one of the tortoises from a cruel and illegal fate,” SPCA Rustenburg shared.

From being prized as exotic pets, especially rare and critically endangered ones, to being poached for food or traditional medicine, tortoises remain in a perilous situation that threatens not just their safety but their very existence.

Unfortunately, the suspects managed to flee the chaos and are still on the run. But one vulnerable life was spared from further uncertainty and anguish. That alone holds immense significance and is a victory worth celebrating.

In a stern message to perpetrators of wildlife trade, the SPCA said:

“Wildlife is not for sale. Tortoises, like all protected species, belong in their natural environment, not in plastic containers or roadside stalls.

The animal heroes further appealed to the greater community to continue being their eyes, helping protect vulnerable animals.

“If you spot any illegal wildlife activity, report it immediately. Together, we can protect those who cannot protect themselves.”
