A Milk Tart Samoosa? Excuse Me... WHAT?!?

A milk tart in a samoosa sounds like a crime against cuisine… until you taste it and realise it might just be the dessert mashup South Africa didn’t know it needed.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 March 2025) – Some ideas make you stop in your tracks and ask, “Wait, what?” And then, if you’re brave enough to give it a go… you might just find yourself smiling mid-bite. Enter the Milk Tart Samoosa, Jozi’s newest flavour fusion that’s got South Africans laughing, arguing and running to taste it.

Yes, you read that right. A Milk Tart Samoosa.

Crispy, golden pastry. Creamy, cinnamon-kissed milk tart filling. It’s the kind of combo that sounds like a dare, feels like a crime, but turns out… might be a stroke of genius.

This daring dessert popped up on TikTok, thanks to Johannesburg-based @kirstyleolashandbrowtech, who confidently declared it a 10 out of 10 after picking it up from Curry Up, an Indian restaurant nestled in Clearwater Mall.

“Just hear me out,” she wrote. “Don’t judge me until you try it.”

And with that, South Africa was hooked.

The internet reacted like any good South African kitchen table would: with dramatic hot takes, cheeky comments, and a whole lot of curiosity. Some were intrigued, some horrified, and others downright conflicted.

“I love me a Milk Tart neh but biting into a Samosa and finding a milk tart filling inside instead of proper filling would send me over the edge.”

“Nooooooooooo!!!!”

“I like to try new things. I’ll have to try this even if I have my doubts.”

“This is cultural assassination, auj”

“GENIUS!”

“This is a crime 😭.”

“I think you onto something here.”

Here’s the thing, at first, it does sound a little strange. Samoosas, those spicy little pockets of joy, are traditionally savoury, filled with curried mince or spicy potatoes. Milk tart, on the other hand, is a South African comfort classic… soft, sweet, dusted with cinnamon, and often shared with love. Putting the two together? It’s like asking a braai master to serve sushi.

And yet… apparently, it works.

Curry Up, part of the We Sell Flavourz Group, didn’t set out to cause a national stir – but that’s exactly what happened.

Founder Alex Zohany shared, “Our Milk Tart Samoosa was born from a simple idea: What if we fused two iconic favourites into one golden, crispy bite? The result was sweet, nostalgic and totally Jozi.”

Designed initially as an experimental dessert, the R50 treat has now become a viral sensation. Thousands have joined the conversation online, with videos, memes, and taste tests flooding social media feeds.

“We’re proud to see our little dessert creating so much conversation,” Alex said.

“Whether you love it, hate it, or are still on the fence, we’re just thrilled to see Jozi buzzing over bold new – and dare we say, quirky – flavour ideas.”

And that’s the real heart of this story: creativity, joy, and the magic of food bringing people together. Whether you’re Team Samoosa, Team Milk Tart, or somewhere deliciously in between, it’s refreshing to see a simple dessert stir up so much delight.
