Rikus de Beer has been busy turning the new crowd favourite, a rendition of The Cranberries “Zombie”, into a fully-fledged rugby anthem.
South Africa (02 July 2024) – What started as the Irish Rugby side trying to get into our heads, has turned into a power ballad at every game the Springboks play. Now, the “Rassie, Rassie, Rassie” rendition of Zombie by the Cranberries, has its own set of Proudly South African lyrics.
In a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), thanks to Rikus de Beer, we get a full 3-minute song sporting new lyrics to go along with the crowd chant that has grown wings and taken off. Zombie can no longer be played without South Africans turning the chorus into a dedication to South Africa’s favourite head of rugby, Rassie Erasmus.
Last week at the Wales game, the song was played and the crowd quickly picked up the tune and changed the lyrics once again, to Rassie’s name. They even did it at the Cricket World Cup!!!
de Beer has turned lyrics like “with their tanks and their bombs and their bombs and their guns” into “hulle try en probeer, ons defense penetree” (which for those who do not sing in Afrikaans, means “they try to penetrate our defense” but it works better in Afrikaans).
While the song holds significant meaning to the Irish and their history, it is now also an anthem for the South African rugby fans once used as a tool to intimidate, fans have shown it takes a little more than a song get into our heads… It is clear to see why this song is quickly going viral!
“Even as an Irish fan I loved this version! Well done lads! Looking forward to a monumental game!” – Hubert Gallagher
