SA Foods Taste Test

Matthew Cost is a 7-year-old South African that recently started a YouTube channel. He did a blind taste test of SA foods and his reactions are the cutest!

Matthew Cost is a sweet-natured 7-year-old South African boy with an adventurous spirit. He recently set up a YouTube channel with the help of his family and has started sharing content that is targeted at South African youth.

Most YouTubers give their following an endearing name and Matthew has selected a truly South African name… He calls his followers “Zoo Biscuits”.

“My channel is about having fun, reviewing toys, and sharing my life as a kid in South Africa.”

Since starting his channel a month ago he has created play-dough food, filled a bath with slime, visited the Two Oceans Aquarium and now he is tasting popular South African food.

When YouTubers do taste test videos of SA foods, they usually stick to a very commercial guideline, Matthew didn’t follow this typical guideline and actually tastes some pretty popular foods from various cultures. Blindfolded and going in with an open mind, he is a brilliant sport!

He starts off with classics like Vetkoek and Koeksisters and then moves on to a delicious looking ‘Kota’, which is similar to a ‘Gatsby’. He then gets a Melktert which he struggles to get into his mouth. Matthew then tries colourful Amaskopas which is sweet and similar to popcorn.

Matthew also tastes Inkomazi, which is a creamy fermented milk also known as Maas. This drink is at the core of South African heritage, it is popular in many South African cultures.

The last SA food on the list is a classic Chappie. These small bubblegums pack a flavour punch (although not for very long) and the wrappers are filled with interesting facts.
