This will be the nation’s seventh consecutive appearance at the Olympics in the post-apartheid era, and nineteenth overall in Summer Olympic history.
South African athletes have won a total of 76 medals, with athletics, boxing, and swimming as the top medal-producing sports.
Following its readmittance to international sport in 1992, South Africa has steadily improved its medal tally.
In 1991, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) visited South Africa. Seeing the country’s move towards democracy as a positive step, the organisation invited the country to participate in the 1992 Olympic Games, which were held in Barcelona, Spain.
With 2 medals already in the bag, we have already surpassed the Beijing Games and with the incredible athletes competing, we’re sure this will be our best year!
