Internationally loved food creator, Mattia Moleri, shows just how sweet South Africa’s festive treat really is.

South Africa (07 January 2025) – South Africans didn’t need international validation to know that malva pudding is elite, but it’s still pretty satisfying when the rest of the world catches on.

Popular food content creator Mattia Moleri recently set out to explore how different countries celebrate Christmas at the table, testing festive recipes from around the world. Among the dishes featured in his series was none other than South Africa’s beloved malva pudding, and let’s just say it left a lasting impression.

In his video, Mattia walks viewers through the process of making the classic dessert, from mixing the batter to pouring the rich, buttery sauce over the cake straight out of the oven. As South Africans know, that moment when the sauce soaks into the sponge is where the magic happens.

Even though Mattia admits he only realised a bit too late that the dessert is traditionally served with custard and vanilla ice cream (not caramel ice cream) it didn’t take away from the overall experience.

For a dish that has long been a staple at South African Christmas tables, Sunday lunches and family gatherings, the international recognition feels like a win.
