Proposal

Saying yes at sea – this couple’s dreamy proposal unfolded with whales as witnesses…

Gansbaai, South Africa (11 August 2025) – It’s not every day your engagement witnesses include whales, endangered penguins, and seals, but for Brazilian couple Carlos Eduardo Tiburzio and Patricia Braga, that’s exactly how their love story turned a new page.

The pair were on a Marine Dynamics Whale Tour, taking in the prime whale-watching season along SA’s West Coast, just off Gansbaai. Already, it was the kind of setting that felt like a scene from a love story.

Their route took them through Shark Alley, between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, a patch of ocean known to be home to a mix of marine life. Southern Right Whales glided through the blue, Cape Fur Seals bobbed about in the waves, African penguins waddled along rocks, and seabirds swooned overhead.

For Carlos, this was no ordinary boat tour. The nerves were real. Knees weak, arms heavy – all the makings of an Eminem tune.

It was a moment he’d been waiting for. A moment he’d replayed in his mind, now playing out against a backdrop of West Coast beauty. With his son at his side as wingman, he turned to Patricia, dropped to one knee, and popped the big question, heart racing as the sea breeze carried his words.

It was the perfect moment, Marine Dynamics said.

“She said she had no idea it was coming… but said yes!”

While spotting the Marine Big 5 was the reason this boat set sail, nobody on board could deny that love stole the show that day.

For just a few minutes, the world seemed to shrink to two love-doves, a ring, and plenty of fish in the sea. But not for this pair, who had just said yes to a lifetime…

The most magical moments happen when you’re chasing whales and end up finding your forever!
