web-series

‘This is Fiction’ is a web-series that follows the lives of different South Africans for a full 24 hours using stereotypes to explore social norms.

The ‘This is Fiction’ web-series was created by the Parody Gang to showcase the lives of a group of people from Johannesburg. Each story is unscripted and shared through the eyes of the “subcultures” living within Johannesburg.

The Parody Gang created the web-series as a way to show the subcultures within stereotypes such as: artists, jocks, gangsters, skaters and corporate hippies. The cast consists of twelve different people from all walks of life. They also said it is,

A series that sets out to break down the barriers of fear and otherness, amidst millennials. Exploring social norms through the eyes of stereotypes, as a means by which to break stereotypes. This Is Fiction™ is as much a critique on the perception of reality, choices and accountability in escapist culture, as it is a commentary on the topics more explicitly dealt with in each episode.

The series uses a constructed blend of fiction and documentary, breaking convention so as to get as close to the truth as viewer perception allows. Unscripted conversation weaved together to create a disjointed yet harmonious narrative, flavoured with humour and the raw antics of the daily hustle

Each webisode is under 5 minutes and is uploaded weekly. Currently there are nine episodes available online. While the camera follows people who are ‘living their real lives’ it’s not exactly real, as they are all actors. It’s definitely not a documentary but it is fascinating and worth a watch.

These episodes are raw and filled with NSFW language but highly addictive and entertaining! Watch the trailer below.
