Johannesburg, South Africa (21 July 2026) – After a heated mixology showdown in Rosebank, local bartender and cocktail bar owner George Hunter has scooped the title of Bartender of the Year in the World Class South Africa competition!
Hunter will go on to represent South Africa in Scotland at the annual Diageo World Class finals in October. He’ll go up against talent from 50 other countries in competing for the coveted title of Global Bartender of the Year 2026.

World Class is an internationally popular bartending competition that celebrates bartenders and mixologists from around the world. It launched almost two decades ago and is one of the most recognisable and celebrated competitions in the hospitality and bartending industry.
“I am proud to be part of a competition of this scale, enriching the bartenders all around. World Class is a tough competition, but you are meant to be pushed to learn and grow! I am glad I rose to the occasion and won knowing I gave it my all. I am looking forward to competing at the global stage.” says George Hunter, reflecting on his national win.

The final showdown happens between 18 to 23 October in Scotland, where finalists will take on a series of challenges behind the bar, designed to test their technical skill, creative thinking, and exceptional all-round performance. Let’s go, Georgie!
