After a woman lost everything but her dog, the Helderberg community rallied together to get her a safe space, essentials and an abundance of support; writing love into her toughest chapter.

Helderberg, South Africa (04 August, 2023) — A member of the Helderberg community in Cape Town, ‘Emma’, had found herself with her back against the wall. She had lost everything she held close and essential, from her furniture to her home.

For Emma and her dog, there seemed to be nowhere else to go but the streets, and so her toughest chapter seemed to have begun.

Although she felt more alone than ever before, someone was paying attention; someone who wanted to see love and support written into this chapter.

Thanks to an angel referred to as Gertruida from Oasis Drop-In Centre, Emma’s story was put on Helderberg Cops radar (Helderberg Community-Oriented Project Service).

Acting quickly, Joelene Cloete and the Helderberg Cops team reached out to their community to make Emma’s journey lighter.

“The response was nothing short of awe-inspiring,” shares Joelene.

“People from all walks of life came together, offering their hands, their hearts, and their resources to aid this fellow community member. Through the generosity and compassion of these amazing individuals, we managed to secure a place for her to stay — a safe haven where she could find some respite from her troubles.”

The community love didn’t stop there. Even after Emma’s temporary home was secured people still asked what more they could do for both her and her pooch.

They organised blankets, food and towels for the pair, and one man even offered to keep the pooch clean and pampered at no cost.  Even the City of Cape Town authorities got involved; checking in to make sure Emma’s temporary space is safe.

Thanks to all of this kindness, enough resources were rallied to cover her stay for two months.

“As she settled into her new temporary home, she could feel the warmth of the community surrounding her. The journey ahead might still be filled with challenges, but with the unwavering support of Helderberg, she knows she is not alone.”

What an incredible community!
