Hillbrow was the source of magic and joy recently as part of an eclectic street parade; a reminder that hope still beats in the hearts of its streets.
Hillbrow, South Africa (05 June, 2023) — Communities in South Africa plagued by negative headlines are changing the narrative in their own ways, with Hillbrow adding its creativity to the ‘there are always two sides’ mantra.
As Lavender Hill photographers took to share their hopeful moments and people during a Cape Town Art exhibition, Hillbrow took to its own blocks. Flair, creativity and fun paraded through the area, reminding Joburgers that hope still beats in the hearts of its streets. Better yet, creatives are leading it.
The Hey Hillbrow! Let’s Dlala! parade 2023 was a long work in progress, uniting communities of theatre, movement, peace enforcers and children’s advocates.
On the 27 May, Hillbrow was drenched in joy as its streets belonged to the hopeful and eccentric costumes and smiles won over the negative narratives.
