There were smiles, a few tears, and a whole lot of purpose as the 9Miles Project launched impactful programmes at Strandfontein High School, which offered safe and empowering spaces to help young girls explore their identities, strengthen their values, and discover their voices.
Cape Town, South Africa (04 July 2025) – The Strandfontein High School hall transformed into a vibrant space for youth engagement during the exciting launch of G.E.M. (9Miles Project’s dedicated girl empowerment initiative) and Activate programmes.
Hosted in collaboration with the school, the workshops were designed specifically to empower their female learners through meaningful and interactive experiences.
Despite the challenges posed by unpredictable winter weather, both initiatives successfully encouraged participants to step out of their comfort zones, connect with others, and reflect on their values, identity, and personal growth.
The G.E.M. programme, which began on Monday, 23 June, saw a slow start as some participants were hesitant to engage. However, thanks to a warm, encouraging atmosphere and interactive icebreakers, the session quickly came alive.

A key highlight was the “Value Currency” exercise, in which participants were invited to reflect on their personal values through a playful marketplace activity filled with materialistic temptations. This powerful, eye-opening session sparked deep reflection among the girls.
“I’m so glad that I came to G.E.M.” said Ameerah Schuller, G.E.M. participant.
Initially scheduled to run over three days from 24-26 June, the Activate programme was unfortunately shortened due to adverse weather. However, the single session held last Tuesday had an immense impact.
More than 30 enthusiastic learners participated in a full day of engaging activities designed to foster teamwork, leadership, and self-awareness.
“Even though we only had one day, the energy and eagerness from the kids were incredible,” said Shanna, one of the programme facilitators.
“The kids were more than willing to participate, and it was amazing to see their mindsets and perspectives shift after just one session.”
The success of both programmes is reflected in the overlap of participants – many of the girls who joined G.E.M. also returned for Activate, a strong indication of the positive and lasting effect of these initiatives.
Both G.E.M and Activate form part of 9Miles Project’s broader mission to provide safe, empowering spaces for youth to explore their identity, strengthen their values, and discover their voices. Through these programmes, young people are reminded that they are seen, heard, and supported.
