South African mixologist, Alexander Fahrenheim, showcased his talent and placed 3rd at the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge a few weeks ago.

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 July 2025) – The South African flag flew proudly in Trinidad and Tobago as Johannesburg-based mixologist Alexander Fahrenheim shook his way to third place at the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge. Competing against 14 of the best mixologists from around the world, Alexander did not just showcase his talent; he brought a piece of South African spirit to the global stage.

“It feels amazing to represent the country,” says Alexander. “It’s a truly special feeling, and I wish for everyone to experience something like that. Whether you’re a Springbok or someone sharing your craft with the world.”

The competition, set in the vibrant Caribbean backdrop, was as energetic behind the scenes as it was in the spotlight. Alexander recalls a joyous atmosphere filled with cultural warmth.

“You’re in the Caribbean, everyone’s full of life. And even in a high-pressure environment, the energy made it all a little easier,” he says.

Alexander’s drinks were rooted in more than just ingredients. They reflected local identity. One of his standout creations reimagined the familiar rum and raspberry (R&R) drink beloved in South Africa. “I’m not a fan of Sparletta, so I gave it a twist with rhubarb,” he laughs. The result? A sweet and colourful tribute to local drinking culture.

Beyond the cocktails, it was the people who made this a special occasion. Fellow competitors from across the world left the biggest impression.

“They all beat dozens to get there. What I learned is know who you are. Don’t change that to chase trends.”

Alexander, who is also a director for cocktail brand Just Short, believes African mixology is in a moment of global momentum.

“We may not have the fanciest tools, but we have the knowledge and the drive. Countries like Kenya and Ghana are right up there too. There’s even an African movement seminar happening at the world’s biggest cocktail conference next week!”

When asked what defines an “Alex Fahrenheim cocktail,” he said it’s not limited.

“It’s not about me, it’s about you (referring to the customer). I tailor every drink to who’s in front of me. That’s what hospitality should be.”

Alex is not just making cocktails, he’s building bridges between culture and craft, one glass at a time.
