The weather is turning and the days which can be dedicated to binge-watching good television are just around the corner so these are our must-watch recommendations…

Johannesburg, South Africa – It has been nearly two years since we shared a “what to watch” list. So we thought we would do an update with the best things to watch right now.

Winter is around the corner so it is nearly time to curl ourselves up in our winter blankets and get binging, before that we thought we would share our top eye-opening movies and series that might just change your life. We highly recommend adding these to your watch-lists.

These are the most inspirational and motivational series and movies we have seen so far plus a few Proudly South African goodies. We are going to issue a blanket “bring the tissues” warning because most of these will make you cry, but good cry!

After Life

Just WOW! This is possibly Ricky Gervais’s best work ever. Sure, he has thrown in his dry sense of humour and crude language but it is a truly touching and heartfelt show that addresses grief, depression and finding the good in life again. You will find this series on Netflix.

“If you’re a good person doing things you want to do, its the same as doing good”

The Kindness Diaries

The Kindness Diaries is a documentary that follows Leon Logothetis on his travels around the world using only a vintage motorbike and relying on the kindness of strangers. After each kindness he receives, he pays them back in unexpected, inspiring ways. You will find this documentary on Netflix.

The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind

Based on true events, this movie is based on a 13-year-old boy who is thrown out of the school he loves when his family can no longer afford the fees. He sneaks into the library and learns how to build a windmill to save his village from famine. He overcomes his adversity by innovating.

You will cry, but you will also be inspired by his drive to improve his village. A story that we see so often right here in South Africa and across the African continent. You will find the movie on Netflix.

The Girl From St. Agnes

Um… firstly it is Proudly South African, secondly, it is brilliant! The Girl From St. Agnes is about a popular girls death at school and how people try to cover up and uncover the truth.

You will find the series on Showmax. You can also find our full review here.

Meerkat Maantuig aka Meerkat Moonship

This magical and whimsical South African movie will inspire you to go and live life to the fullest. The message behind the movie is a clear one, don’t be afraid to live your life, go out there and really give life a go! It is an incredibly inspiring story about a young girl who fears anything new because she is convinced her name is cursed. She gets sent to live with her grandparents and makes a new friend. Life opens up to her and she learns that she doesn’t have to fear everything. The movie is available on Showmax.

Beyond the River

The movie follows the life and struggles of two men from opposite sides of the track, one who is escaping a life of crime and the other escaping heartache. They both start working towards competing in “The Dusi”, a real-life rowing competition that happens annually in South Africa. Beyond the River is inspired by true events so it really kicks you in the feels department.

The movie came out in 2017 but if you haven’t seen it yet, we highly recommend it, you can read our full review here. You will find it on Showmax.
