Istanbul is a cat lovers dream! The city is filled with stray cats who have become a part of the peoples daily lives. The documentary ‘Kedi’ has been raved about all over the world!
A documentary was filmed in Istanbul about the population of cats that live there. The documentary focuses on the unique lives and personalities of 7 cats in particular. The documentary is called ‘Kedi’ meaning cat in Turkish.
Ceyda Torun, the director of Kedi, lived in the city until she was 11 and saw the beauty of the lives lived by the Kedi there. She created a documentary that examines the lives of the 7 cats. Ms Torun’s camera alternately glides knee-high alongside sauntering cats and then swoops over rooftops for stunning aerial views of the Golden Horn.
The reviews have been amazing for the documentary.
“It’s hard to say whether Ceyda Torun’s delightful and visually splendid Kedi is a documentary about Istanbul, with cats, or a documentary about cats that happens to be set in Istanbul. Making that distinction is probably as useless as trying to parse the blurred tones on a tabby’s belly.” – Time
The city takes great pride in caring for the cats, they leave food and water out for the cats so that they can continue to roam free. Restaurants have tip boxes out front that are used to help pay for veterinary bills of the sick or injured animals. The local fisherman let the cats sample their anchovies.
“Without the cat, Istanbul would lose a part of its soul,” explains one resident in “Kedi”
The cats are famous around the world, there are popular Facebook and Instagram pages known as “Cats of Istanbul” that are viewed all around the world. One of the most famous cats of Istanbul to date is Tombili. Tombili was photographed sitting like a human and his image went viral, his image was so popular an online campaign was started to have a bronze made of him.
