During last week’s wildfire disaster in Cape Town, a display of compassion and community spirit came alive as residents and hotel owners opened their doors and offered their beds to the elderly who had to urgently evacuate their retirement home.

Cape Town, South Africa (06 May 2025) – Last week, we shared about the devastating wildfire that ravaged the Tokai area of Table Mountain and how our firefighters tirelessly battled those flames.

While all that was happening, another powerful moment unfolded during that very disastrous fire as a compassionate community came together to protect vulnerable residents of the Noordhoek Manor Retirement Village.

The elderly residents had been instructed to quickly evacuate the home when the fire, which had been burning over several days, threatened the quiet village.

According to You’ve Earned It (YEI), the evacuation was carried out with calm and attentiveness as staff members, many of whom had families and homes of their own at risk, stayed behind to ensure every resident was accounted for.

And the kindness didn’t stop there. Once out of the retirement village, nearby residents and local hotel owners didn’t think twice about opening their doors to the displaced elderly when they saw them, offering spare beds and warm meals to see them through the unforeseen evacuation.

One can only imagine how touched those oumas and oupas were in that very moment where uncertainty was met with humanity.

It’s one of those moments that easily warm the heart and affirm just how considerate and caring South Africans are. In that, even in the face of commotion and utter disaster not too far from their very doorstep, they would still offer whatever they could within their means to help someone else going through a hard time.

All the residents were later safely relocated to nearby facilities, and we’re so happy they were in safe hands throughout!
