The Eric Miles Cheshire Home is celebrating 50 years of heart, history, and a record-breaking leap into the future!
Cape Town, South Africa (14 January 2026) – In 2026, the Eric Miles Cheshire Home (EMCH) in Cape Town celebrates its Golden Jubilee, and they aren’t just looking back; they are making history. They are kicking off their 50th-anniversary celebrations by unveiling South Africa’s largest-ever printed QR code!
EMCH, a registered non-profit organisation and part of a national network of 16 Cheshire Homes, first opened its doors on 12 June 1976. For five decades, the Home has provided care, dignity, and community for adults living with physical disabilities.
The anniversary celebrations officially kick off on Saturday, 17 January 2026, with the launch of a 100m² printed QR code – the largest of its kind in the country.
Members of the public are encouraged to follow EMCH’s social media platforms to discover where the QR code leads and how it connects to the Home’s mission of empowering physically disabled adults.
Further highlights of the anniversary year include a special awareness initiative in March, when the Chairman of the Board, together with a group of cyclists, will take part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour, pulling resident Jeff Kao in a custom buggy for the full 109km route.
On June 12, the Home will celebrate its birthday with a true 70s disco party.
With smaller events in between, they will end the festivities on a high note with their Annual Fete on 31 October 2026. This annual fundraising event has been running for over 30 of the 50 years and brings various organisations like Rotary Clubs, Lions Clubs and church groups together to create a bazaar like no other.
The Home receives a quarterly grant from the Department of Social Development, but this only covers roughly 20% of operational expenses.
All fundraising efforts, including the 50th anniversary festivities, are aimed at raising funds for the Home and its 30+ residents who are dependent on staff for their daily living activities and dignity.
