It has been seven months since FoodForward SA set out to help 30 community halls housing displaced people after the KZN floods; they fed 5000 people every day.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (15 November 2022) – FoodForward SA is South Africa’s largest food redistribution charity, and they have touched so many lives throughout the last seven months. They quickly answered the call to aid KZN flood victims who have been displaced.

They continued to provide warm meals accompanied by fruit and dairy to over 5000 people every day. The programme came to an end at the end of October, after seven months of aid and support. They were able to raise just over R17 million towards the feeding programme and collect R10 million in food.

“Over the past seven months, FoodForward SA has been providing a cooked meal 7 days a week to more than 5,000 displaced people living in 30 community halls across KZN.

As we conclude our #KZNFloodRelief efforts, we would like to thank the real food heroes, our Beneficiary Organisations, who selflessly committed to cooking and serving warm meals seven days a week at the various community halls”

“Thank you, for your generous response in helping us restore dignity and sustain the livelihoods of communities in need.”

The organisation aims to reduce hunger in South Africa by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food and making it available to those who need it.

FoodForward SA launched “Repurpose the Surplus” in September this year – a campaign to raise awareness of South Africa’s dire food insecurity crisis, and how we can solve it.

According to a recent Department of Environment, Forestry & Fisheries report, more than 10 million tonnes of quality food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain annually.

This amounts to one-third of all the food produced in the country.

At the same time, 30 million people in South Africa lack regular access to enough safe and nutritious food – whether that’s due to unavailability or being unable to afford it.
