South Africa’s very best are definitely keeping our choir cravings looked after this month!
Johannesburg (16 September 2025) – Few things stir our hearts quite like a powerful choir. It’s the reason so many performances make our headlines. Three of which have seen thousands of eyes just this month alone.
See examples one, two, and three! South Africans love a choir.
In another piece of good news in that department, four of the country’s most loved university choirs are bringing the magic to Johannesburg this month.
On Saturday 20 September, the University of Johannesburg Choir will host the University Choirs Concert at the Sanlam Auditorium on their Kingsway Campus. They’ll be joined by the University of Pretoria Camerata, North-West University’s PUK Choir, and the University of the Free State Bloemfontein Choir.
Together, they’ll bring the roof down gently.
The UP Camerata has just come home from singing under the neon lights of Times Square and even performed at the ACDA National Conference in Dallas.
The PUK Choir, with roots stretching back seven decades whose shelves are lined with gold medals from world competitions, are bringing the soul they’re known for.
The UFS Bloem Choir have brought home gold from Europe, winning the European Choir Games in Sweden.
And Jozi’s own UJ Choir, celebrating 20 years of lifting spirits and flying the South African flag high on stages all around the world.
“This biennial gathering of northern university choirs is a highlight in our events,” says UJ choirmaster, Sizwe Mondlane. “And to host it in the time that UJ celebrates two decades makes it that much more of a special occasion above gathering with our friends in music that have, in many ways, journeyed with us.”
Choirs are where you see young South Africans from every background stand shoulder to shoulder and create something bigger than themselves. When those voices rise up together, it feels like a small glimpse of the country we’re all proud to live in.
So, four choirs. One stage. Heritage month. It’s all the vibes!
