During CHD Awareness Week, Heart Kids South Africa teamed up with hospital staff to bring joy, awareness, and support to young heart patients and their families.

Pretoria, South Africa (19 February 2026) – Red balloons, face paints, and laughter filled the pediatric ward at Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria as Heart Kids South Africa celebrated CHD Awareness Week.

The non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting awareness of congenital heart defects (CHD), turned the ward into a vibrant space filled with red balloons, games, sweets, and face painting, making the week extra special for children and their families.

Working hand-in-hand with healthcare staff, the team ensured that every child felt celebrated. From decorating the ward to playing imaginative games, the team brought smiles and a sense of connection, reminding families that they are part of a caring community.

“CHD Awareness Week is about more than awareness it’s about hope, connection and standing together in support of every heart warrior,” the organisation shared.

The initiative also highlighted the tireless work of healthcare professionals in paediatric wards, showing how collaboration between staff and nonprofit organisations can create moments of joy and reassurance for patients. Through these activities, Heart Kids South Africa combined education, advocacy, and fun, helping children enjoy a lighthearted break from their medical routines while promoting the importance of CHD awareness.

“During CHD Awareness Week, special moments of awareness, support and celebration took place at Steve Biko Hospital in Pretoria bringing smiles and encouragement to heart children and their families.”
