An event held in Durban celebrated the unique beauty of children with albinism and fostered a culture of understanding and acceptance.
Durban, South Africa (01 October 2024) – It’s 2024, and although we have made significant strides in the development of our beautiful country and its people, it’s still so important to continue shedding light and spreading information on important matters, particularly those that promote the inclusivity of marginalised groups.
September was Albinism Awareness Month in South Africa, and while albinism is simply a genetic condition in which individuals lack skin, hair, and eye pigmentation, there are still harmful stereotypes and false beliefs associated with people who have this unique condition.
While albinism affects people across the globe, it is prevalent in Africa, according to the United Nations.
Wrapping up Albinism Awareness Month, eThekwini Community Services Chairperson Councillor Zama Sokhabase held an event with a gathering of many young children at the Ushaka Marine World over the weekend.
The event was held under the theme of Inclusivity, Equity, and Human Rights Protection of Persons with Albinism. It sought to create a more inclusive and compassionate society where everyone, regardless of their differences, is treated with respect and dignity.
Flanked by the Community Participation and Action Support Unit: Disability Office, Sokhabase reaffirmed the City’s commitment to the rights and well-being of persons with albinism, saying:
“It is time that we educate communities on Albinism and eradicate mythical stereotypes.”
There is no cure for the absence of melanin that is central to albinism nor is there a need for one, people with the condition are just beautifully rare and just like you and me, deserve to be treated with respect, human decency and kindness too.
This is just one of the many calls to be a part of the rainbow nation that we so boldly speak about and embrace one another’s differences while spreading messages that build one another up.
