Matt Elliott shares how he cycled 500km non-stop across KwaZulu-Natal, tackling mountains, rain, and long hours in a gruelling challenge.
South Africa (05 December 2025) – Salt Rock’s Matt Elliott isn’t your average cyclist. Last weekend, he pedalled 500km non-stop from Hilton to the coast, conquering mountains, darkness, and long hours in what he calls an “incredible, gruelling adventure.”
The seed for the challenge was planted earlier this year, after Matt completed a three-day, 260km mountain bike race.
“After that, my father asked if I thought I could do that twice. I said I’d give it a go, and he promised he’d support me along the way. From that moment, the challenge became something we committed to together.”
For Matt, the journey wasn’t just about endurance; it was about making memories with his dad.
“He’s always been my biggest supporter. Life gets busy with family and work, and we don’t get to spend a lot of time together. So I thought it would be something special we could plan and experience together.”
Setting off at 4 am, Matt’s route took him through some of KwaZulu-Natal’s most stunning countryside.
Hilton – Howick- Karkloof – Midmar – Impendle – Underberg – Himeville – Kamberg – Mooi River – Rosetta – Notties – Karkloof – York – New Hanover – Wartburg – Bhamshela – Ballito, before finally reaching Salt Rock.
“From about 10pm to midnight was definitely the hardest part. It started to rain, the temperature dropped, and I ran out of liquids for about an hour. I had to dig deep, keep a positive mindset, and just keep moving to reach my next checkpoint where family were waiting.”
While much of the ride was solo, support from family and friends made all the difference.
“I knew if I could just get to a certain point, my friends and my wife would be there. I was riding through the forest when I saw their headlights. I knew it was them. We rode the last 100km together, and having people to chat to and support me was incredible.”
Reflecting on the journey, Matt says it was a lesson in human potential.
“Your body is so much more capable than you think. With the right mindset, you can push far beyond what you believe.”
He also credits his coach and friend, Tyrone White from Drive Train Academy, for guiding him through the preparation.
“Tyrone’s experience and mentorship made a huge difference, having someone who’s been there helps you train smarter and stay motivated.”
In the end, Matt’s 500km adventure wasn’t just about endurance. It was about family, friendship, community, and discovering just how far you can push yourself.
