So many more children will get to receive the safest, highest-quality care at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital thanks to the addition of a 100% donor-funded Orthopaedic Unit.
Cape Town, South Africa (02 October 2025) – After much planning, facilitating, donating and building the Orthopaedic Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital is officially open!
The transformative moment for paediatric healthcare made possible through the Children’s Hospital Trust was officially unveiled on Tuesday, 30 September.
“This 100% donor-funded state-of-the-art R90 million facility is a game-changer, bringing together a 30-bed inpatient ward, outpatient consultation rooms, two specialist operating theatres, procedure rooms, a central nurses’ station, a physiotherapy gym, treatment spaces, and a therapeutic playground all under one roof!
“Serving over 5,000 paediatric orthopaedic patients annually, this unit will also act as a vital training hub for the next generation of specialists,” the Children’s Hospital Trust confirmed.
Various stakeholders attended the orthopaedic unit launch, including hospital management, WCDHW leadership, key donors, dignitaries and Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, who delivered a keynote address and lauded the hospital as the healthcare gold standard in South Africa.
“Their new orthopaedic unit raises the bar even higher with new beds, isolation cubicles, treatment rooms, and a physiotherapy room,” he said.

By funding critical resources, cutting-edge equipment, and specialised training, the dedicated team which runs the fundraising arm of the hospital ensures children have access to the safest, highest-quality care closer to home.
Thanks to the generosity of a group of donors, thousands of sick and injured children will receive world-class orthopaedic care annually. This means thousands of children will experience healing, restored hope, promising futures, and families who can rest easy.
