Princess Charlene of Monaco was visiting South Africa with her Foundation to continue her work with water safety. Teaching CPR and water safety was her goal!
Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco visited South Africa with her foundation to promote water safety. She visited the Gugulesizwe Primary School in Benoni, on Friday, April 21 as her first official day of her 5 day trip.
Water safety is a cause close to the Princess’s heart. She was a South African Olympic swimmer before she met Prince Albert II of Monaco.
“I created the foundation on the basis that we would teach children and teach people, to swim. Then we expanded to water safety programmes and now we have just implemented CPR”
She was a Patron of the South African Red Cross, here to teach child headed homes the essentials of first aid and CPR skills in order to give them skills as orphans with responsibility for their siblings.
Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in South Africa after road accidents. Last year, the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation South Africa taught 27,242 essential water safety skills and 2,507 children to swim.
HSH Princess Charlene hopes that her twins, Jacques and Gabriella, will grow up knowing their South African heritage.
“I am African and this is my heritage. It will always be. It’s in my heart and in my veins.”
“I can’t wait for them to come here. I can’t wait for them to be introduced to Africa.”
The Princess was on hand at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco to honour the Waves for Change surf therapy initiative, based in Cape Town. Another charity with goals in water safety and swimming. You can read more about the charity here.
