Talented, aspiring South African artisans from various educational institutions will showcase their expertise in a wide range of skills in France this week.
Lyon, France (10 September 2024) – The WorldSkills Team South Africa has embarked on an exciting journey to France where they will proudly represent the country at the 47th WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon from 10-15 September 2024.
The international competition provides an opportunity to exchange skills, experience and technological innovations.
With the widespread appeal of traditional professions like medicine, law, accounting, and education, careers in artisanry often remain undervalued or overshadowed as viable and fulfilling paths for young people to explore.
The competition offers an effective platform for increasing awareness about apprenticeships and artisanal skills, improving the standard of vocational education and training, and advocating for artisanal skills.
The SA competitors come from TVET Colleges, Universities of Technology and private training colleges.
Supported by the Department of Higher Education and Training, the team will join about 1,500 other competitors from more than 65 countries across the world to showcase their expertise in 62 skills, divided into six sectors.
These sectors include:
- Construction and Building Technology,
- Social and Personal Services,
- Creative Arts and Fashion,
- Information and Communication Technology,
- Manufacturing and Engineering Technology
- and Transportation and Logistics.
For South Africa, this opportunity will also showcase and elevate the world of artisans, making these careers appealing to young people and boosting their employment prospects.
