A new social media challenge has started on Facebook and it’s becoming popular but what is it all about? We did some investigating…

Social Media Challenges are always trending and each one offers society something new. Remember the NEK Nomination? That social media challenge trended globally and is the founding reason why Good Things Guy exists today… Well, sort of!

Good Things Guy exists today because of the founder, Brent Lindeque. He was challenged to down a drink and challenge three people and instead, he fed a homeless man. That is how the RAK social media challenge was born and it went viral globally.

Now the latest one is called the 2-for-1 Challenge. It was started by 6 UCT students as part of an assignment.

“It started out as just a UCT university assignment where we had two hours and R75 to create value in any way. We were conscious of the fact that we had the opportunity to improve social welfare but we wanted to do it in a sustainable way that would continue to help those in need. As a result, we decided to use Facebook and nominate people who weren’t bound by our assignment criteria.”

It is a simple concept really, all you have to do is make a double lunch and give one to someone in need. Then challenge three friends to do the same.

Since the challenge started, their Facebook page has been filled with people feeding car guards and good samaritans, matric students and people with disabilities.

Instead of waiting for a nomination, why don’t you head out and be the first person to challenge your friends. Below are some of the posts being shared. You can see more on their Facebook page here.

“Today I decided to say a well-deserved thank you to this lovely man who has been helping people carry water from the Newlands Spring. I have seen him helping out at 5 am in the morning and up until 11 pm at night. These guys are working so hard to help the water collection process be a bit easier. So I decided that he was the person who I would be making lunch for today.” – Chelsea Stroobach
