Johannesburg, South Africa (18 May 2021) – Half of all South Africans gained weight during the lockdown, with 69% of the population now bordering on obesity. This is according to a 2021 national survey commissioned by Pharma Dynamics, a provider of cardiovascular medicine, and weighs up well against national statistics, demonstrating that 31% of men and 68% of women in South Africa are obese.

While the vast majority (88%) are aware that obesity heightens a person’s risk for severe COVID-19 complications, 19% of those polled said they wouldn’t be making any attempt to address their weight issues.

“For many people, the idea of exercising is just too daunting,” says Gumtree’s Estelle Nagel. “Not only are people wary of gyms for fear of contracting COVID-19, but many just can’t afford the fees anymore.” For those looking for a safer and more cost-effective way of getting in shape, Nagel believes second-hand home gym equipment is their best bet.

“Gym equipment is a prime resell item. Many people splash out money on a brand-new treadmill or rowing machine and use it for a few months, only to become demotivated and leave it to gather dust. Buying second-hand is a much smarter option,” she says. There are currently 8,500 sports and fitness equipment listings on the site, including exercise bikes, ergo machines, weights, squat racks, cable machines and bench presses. There are also over 150 listings for personal trainers all over South Africa.

“The beauty of a personal trainer is that they can come to you,” says Nagel. “And it may even work out less expensive than joining a gym. With talk of a third wave of COVID-19 looming, now would certainly be a good time to set up your home gym and start shedding those extra kilos,” she says.

Earlier this year I took on the challenge of keeping to a fitness routine for 100 consecutive days. I wrote about the entire experience here. I decided to do it all again, except I am ramping up my daily calories, and I’m taking you on the journey with me.
