WCBS is calling on everyday heroes to donate blood and stay cosy this winter with limited-edition hero socks, ensuring toasty toes throughout the Cape!
South Africa (06 May 2025) – Winter in the Western Cape brings rain, chilly winds and, unfortunately, a drop in blood donations. Between sniffly noses, school holidays and the temptation to stay under the duvet, the result is often dangerously low blood stocks when patients need them most. But that is about to hopefully change!
The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) isn’t letting cold feet stop them from saving lives. Enter their annual winter campaign with a bold (and delightfully snug) theme: Heroes. Because, as it turns out, heroes don’t all wear capes, but most do wear socks!
Step Up to Be a Hero is the rallying cry for warm-hearted South Africans this year to roll up their sleeves and make a life-saving difference, even when the weather’s trying to convince them otherwise. And in return, a pair of warm superhero socks to keep your toes toasty!
“We hope to ignite a sense of community and compassion by encouraging individuals to help meet the ongoing demand for blood, especially during the challenging winter months,” says Marike Carlie, WCBS Public Relations Manager.
As a token of appreciation, WCBS is giving away limited-edition hero socks every month from May to August. They’re bold, they’re bright, and they’re perfect for curling up with a warm drink after making a life-saving blood donation.
So whether you’re a first-time donor or a seasoned sleeve-roller-upper, now’s the perfect time to be someone’s real-life superhero.
Because in a world full of cold feet, we need warm-hearted heroes. And yes, stylish socks help, too.
If you’re between 16 and 75 years old, weigh 50kg or more, and are in good general health with a safe sexual lifestyle, you can be a hero and donate blood. The process is safe, takes only 30 minutes, and the body replenishes the 475ml of donated blood within 24 hours. Donors are encouraged to eat a good meal 3–4 hours before donating and stay well hydrated before and after the donation.
