Four-legged Blacky was all smiles when her new kennel and blanket were delivered this week. All thanks to her 11-year-old human’s commitment to caring for her!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (04 September 2026) – Blacky is a very lucky four-legged girl from the township of Mpophomeni. She recently became the owner of a brand-new kennel after she and her young guardian, Lwandle Ngubane, worked their way up to Funda Nenja’s top class.

Lwandle was only nine when the pair joined the organisation’s weekly dog school programme in 2024. Since then, the now 11-year-old has kept showing up for training sessions with Blacky, where he has learned invaluable lessons about caring for and working with his four-legged companion.

Funda Nenja loves to celebrate dog guardians who put in the effort. Lwandle’s commitment and regular attendance earned special recognition. A new kennel and cosy new blanket were delivered to their home as a well-earned reward.

“Funda Nenja has a policy of recognising and rewarding dog guardians who demonstrate a willingness to learn how to best care for their four legged companions…” the organisation shares. “Eleven year old Lwandle Ngubane joined our dog school in 2024 together with Blacky. They have now reached the top class as a result of Lwandle’s commitment to the program, and regular attendance. Our team decided to reward this tremendous effort by gifting them with a brand new kennel and blanket.”

Funda Nenja’s name means ‘learning with a dog’ in isiZulu – that is what happens every Friday in the KwaZulu-Natal township. Children arrive at dog school with their pups and spend their time learning how to train, understand and properly care for them. The sessions teach youngsters to take responsibility for another living being and encourages a kinder relationship between children and animals.

Beyond dog school, Funda Nenja helps local families access basic veterinary care, including vaccinations and sterilisation. The organisation also runs a food relief and food garden programme that supports families and their four-leggeds in the community.

The organisation’s special policy of recognising children who really take the lessons to heart helps keep them motivated and gives them something to feel proud of. In the long run, this does a world of good for families with pets.
