As 2024 winds down, the final Friday Five is here – a bumper edition packed with movies that dazzle, series that grip, music that moves, and places that inspire. It’s your ultimate guide to ending the year on a high note, celebrating the good things that make life extraordinary.
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 December 2024) – The end of the year is here, and with it comes the last “Friday Five” for 2024 – a go-to guide for all the good things you need to know about movies, series, music, books, places to go, and even a little inspiration to carry into 2025.
But this isn’t just any edition. It’s a bumper one! Why? Because, frankly, I’ve had a little more time on my hands to explore, binge-watch, and dive into all sorts of things. So, grab a coffee (or a festive cocktail), and let’s jump in!
🎬 Movies That Made the Cut
If you’re looking for something action-packed, heartwarming, and bursting with holiday cheer, “Red One” is it. Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a North Pole warrior and Chris Evans as a regular guy swept into a wild mission to save Christmas, this film delivers big laughs, thrilling action, and just the right amount of festive charm.
Sure, it didn’t quite make waves at the box office, but who cares? Critics might have missed the sparkle, but I didn’t. It’s a perfect addition to my yearly Christmas watch list, and I’m pretty sure it’ll make it onto yours too.
Where to Watch: Streaming now on Prime or available to rent on Apple TV and Google TV.
For a complete change of pace, “Juror 2” is a courtroom drama that had me hooked from start to finish. The story dives into the moral conflict of a juror who has a personal connection to the case on trial—stay silent or reveal the truth? It’s a powerful, thought-provoking exploration of right and wrong with twists that kept me guessing.
This one isn’t just a movie; it’s an experience. Easily one of the most compelling stories I’ve seen this year.
Where to Watch: Now streaming on Max or available to rent on Apple TV and Google TV.
🍿 Series to Binge Before the Year Ends
Netflix’s “No Good Deed” is a rollercoaster of suspense, chaos, and jaw-dropping twists—a “whodunit” that constantly has you asking, “Wait, WTF is going on?” It’s like peeling an onion; just when you think you’ve figured it out, another layer of mystery is revealed, and it’s even more deliciously complicated than the last.
With razor-sharp dialogue, gripping performances, and moments that make you audibly gasp, “No Good Deed” doesn’t just entertain – it consumes you.
This isn’t a casual watch; it’s the kind of show that demands your full attention and rewards you with a story that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll. Buckle up – it’s a wild, unmissable ride.
Looking for something refreshingly twisted? Laid on Peacock (coming soon to DStv) is a darkly comedic romp through the romantic comedy genre. Stephanie Hsu is brilliant as Ruby, an event planner whose ex-lovers begin dying in the order she’s dated them.
Morbid? Yes.
Hilarious? Absolutely.
Critics have called it “the perfect holiday binge,” and I’m inclined to agree. With clever writing, standout performances, and a premise that turns rom-com tropes on their head, this series is both wildly entertaining and surprisingly poignant.
Also, there are a CRAZY amount of cameos. So much fun.
🎶 Songs That Hit the Right Note
Miley Cyrus teams up with Andrew Wyatt and Lykke Li in “Beautiful That Way”. Featured in “The Last Showgirl”, this hauntingly beautiful ballad hits all the emotional notes. If you haven’t heard it yet, go listen – it’s up for a Golden Globe, and it deserves every bit of recognition.
Myles Smith’s “Nice to Meet You” is one of those tracks that stays with you long after it’s over. It’s introspective but upbeat, with a melody that makes you want to hit repeat. Think Coldplay vibes but with a fresh twist. Perfect for those end-of-year reflections.
And who can resist Imagine Dragons? “Take Me to the Beach” perfectly captures that universal longing to escape and find peace. It’s an anthem for anyone craving freedom, wrapped in the band’s signature energetic sound.

🌍 Looking Ahead to 2025
Instead of resolutions, which often feel rigid and can lead to unnecessary pressure, why not set intentions or choose a guiding theme for the year? This approach is gentler and more focused, offering flexibility and room for growth.
A theme acts as a compass, steering your actions and decisions in a meaningful direction without the weight of ticking off boxes.
For me, this year’s theme is to be present and purposeful in everything I do.
It’s about embracing each moment fully, making intentional choices, and finding meaning in both the big milestones and the small, everyday joys. Whether it’s work, relationships, or personal growth, I want to engage with life authentically and with purpose.
What about you? What theme resonates with where you are and where you want to go? Maybe it’s about courage, connection, or balance. Whatever you choose, let it be something that inspires and empowers you as you step into the year ahead.
As we say goodbye to 2024, remember this: every day is a chance to find the good, to spread kindness, and to make a difference – no matter how small.
Here’s to a new year filled with incredible moments, inspiring stories, and all the good things.
Thank you for everything 2024… and a big fat, excited cheers to 2025!
