Fikile Mbalula just wanted to say good morning to South Africa… but twitter told him and the ANC to voetsek!
South Africa (11 August 2020) – After 138 days of lockdown, it seems South Africans have had enough of the lack of help from the government and are incredibly angry with the constant corruption that just won’t go away… so many have taken to Twitter to say #VoetsekANC!
The lockdown in South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly difficult for many people who have not been able to work and have also not seen any assistance from the government. There is also massive amounts of corruption within the leading political party that has started to be uncovered with the funds that were meant to help the country. Added to that, many South Africans feel that some of the regulations that were implemented during the lockdown do not make sense.
And so #VoetsekANC has been the number one trending hashtag in the country for over a week now, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.
Voetsek is a very descriptive South African word, which is an informal expression of rejection. Basically, it directly translates to “go away,” and Twitter is not scared to tell it like it is.
We wouldn’t normally report on a trending hashtag, but just yesterday Fikile Mbalula – the Minister of Transport in South Africa – tweeted, and the response was just too funny not to share.
The tweet was simple, “Good morning twittermantarians happy monday God bless.” But the response was absolutely epic, and a realisation that sometimes “you need to read the room.”
Thousands upon thousands of South Africans responded with the hashtag #VoetsekANC.
