Riz Ahmed releases a powerful video about missing loved ones while being locked away, building a new future and remembering how governments have let nations down during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Global (27 October 2020) – You may know him from “The Night Of” or “Venom” or perhaps as one of Time’s 100 most influential lists, but Riz Ahmed is now going viral with his spoken-word performance about the COVID-19 pandemic.
The effects of newly heightened lockdowns are being felt all around the world, with people across the globe unable to mix with friends and family. The changes make the timing of Ahmed’s newly released I Miss You feel even more profound.
Ahmed is a British actor, activist, and rapper born in London to a Pakistani immigrant family. The 37-year-old actor has a long list of achievements; an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe nomination. His work has also earned him three British Independent Films Awards nominations. Ahmed received critical acclaim for his role in HBO’s The Night Of and became the first Muslim South Asian male to win an Emmy Award for it.
The newly released spoken-word performance features Ahmed speaking to the camera for almost four minutes about life during the coronavirus pandemic. The rap, he says, is “dedicated to the ones we miss and the ones we lost”.
Ahmed may have written this with the UK in mind, but his entire piece is relatable to most right now.
