The Nelson Mandela Bay had cause to celebrate over the weekend after a substantial amount of rain fell over vital catchment areas.
Footage of rivers flowing rapidly after a major rainfall in Port Elizabeth has brought feelings of real joy and delight to South Africans. In July of this year, the Kouga Dam was at a shocking 7.88%, now thanks to rainfall in the area, the dam was measured at 30.93% today.
The South African Weather Service had predicted heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, flooding and snowfall over parts of South Africa.
“This extreme, wintery weather is likely to include snowfalls, accompanied by widespread, bitterly cold conditions over many parts of South Africa, with coldness persisting for a four to five-day period in some places.
Moreover, there will also be a risk of localised heavy rain and/or incidents of flash flooding for parts of Western and Eastern Cape, particularly along the southern and south-eastern coast and adjacent interior regions.”
This week, Garth Sampson the South African Weather Services spokesperson from their Port Elizabeth confirmed that there were significant falls in the catchment areas main supply dams overnight.
“Although only 29mm were measured at the Port Elizabeth Airport, it was a very different situation in the catchment of Nelson Mandela Bay. Joubertina had a whopping 163mm and our man on the spot Anton, at Kareedouw, said his rain gauge overflowed at midnight, so he had more than 155mm. Even Patensie was lucky and recorded 41mm.”
Evidence of the substantial rains was caught on camera by a few people. Andre Roux filmed a raging river flowing towards the Kouga Dam. People have been celebrating the video. While the rains have been great, the area is still drought-stricken, so save water wherever possible.
Andre Roux said, “I often travel through Joubertina Langkloof . I’ve never seen the Waboomsriver like this. Yesterday I captured the Wabooms River @Joubertina {Langkloof } in flood – about 160 mm of rain had fallen recently. All this water is going to the Kouga Dam, which was 7% recently.”
