10,000 Champions Initiative launches in Soweto to equip youth with digital skills, leadership training and economic empowerment by 2030.

Soweto, South Africa (09 July 2025) – Soweto’s celebration of the youth of South Africa goes beyond the month of June as they become the launchpad for an ambitious national youth initiative called 10,000 Champions. A movement aimed at empowering a new generation of young South Africans to become purpose-driven, digitally skilled, and economically active leaders by 2030.

Held in the heart of a community known for its rich and symbolic youth-led resistance, marking a fitting starting point for a program centred on transformation and leadership. The launch opened with remarks by community leader, Jeff Mamogale and was followed by author and speaker Nomvuyo Bengane sharing insights from her personal growth journey. A good example for the youth to draw inspiration from, reminding them that personal transformation often begins with embracing one’s roots. The selected participants will face months of training, which covers purpose discovery, digital and business skills, job creation and mindset development. These are pillars that the organisers hope the champions will carry forever.

The initiative marks the start of a six-month plan aimed at training the first 100 young leaders or champions who will ultimately become catalysts for change within their communities. This bold initiative kicked off with a dynamic event bringing together youth participants, facilitators, community leaders and supporters for a day focused on mindset shifting, personal development and goal setting.

A memorable part of the event was a powerful hands-on exercise that challenged the participants to break through personal barriers, a symbolic act where they broke through wooden boards representing their fears and other limiting beliefs.

The programme is not limited to just training individuals, but to instilling a ripple effect that can lead others to create change in their homes, communities, and broader society. Organisers have called on business leaders, funders and youth organisations to help scale the movement beyond its starting point in Soweto.

With the ball already rolling, 10,000 Champions has positioned itself as a long-term investment in the future of South Africa and in Africa’s next generation of purpose-led, skilled and empowered leaders. A beautiful reminder that transformation begins with people, not just promises, and with young people at the forefront, possibilities are limitless.
