Thanks to the public’s kindness, a man who has courageously faced insurmountable health challenges has found his ultimate companion and guide dog – the kind of perfect match that the SA Guide Dog Association hopes to create more of this holiday season.

Hartbeespoort, South Africa (10 December 2025) – It is always inspiring to witness people who, despite facing significant odds, still make the most of their lives.

One such person is Andries, whose life has been marked by extraordinary courage. Diagnosed with his first brain tumour at just nine years old, he has faced multiple surgeries, survived several strokes, and battled Muscular Dystrophy.

Even through these immense challenges, Andries became a familiar inspiration in Hartbeespoort, cycling long distances, competing in major races, and raising funds for causes close to his heart.

Recently, however, a second large brain tumour has severely affected his vision. Andries can no longer see at all in his left eye and only has deteriorating tunnel vision in his right.

Fortunately, thanks to the support and generosity of the greater public, Andries has found the perfect four-legged companion: Udo, his guide dog.
The perfect match was facilitated by the South African Guide Dog Association for the Blind, and now Andries has a guide, partner and friend to help better navigate what has been a very challenging journey.

He is one of so many individuals whose lives have been greatly improved by having a furry friend by their side. The SA Guide Dog Association hopes to make this life-changing partnership possible for many more this holiday season.

“This Christmas, we celebrate the bond between an assistance dog and their forever person.  Each partnership begins with a careful matching process, pairing every dog’s unique skills and personality with the person whose needs they can meet best.

“Your donation can help create the next story, and with matched giving, your donation will be doubled,” the Association said.
