Youth supporting youth! A matric learner named Ashton Dry beat cancer when he was a child. Recently, he rallied ‘Ashton’s Army’ in an epic effort to raise funds and support children in their own cancer battles.

Margate, South Africa (14 February 2025) — In a powerful, full circle moment, matric learner Ashton Dry recently gave back to the same charity that supported him through his battle with cancer. Rallying ‘Ashton’s Army’, the teen fuelled a fantastic fundraising effort and was able to donate a small fortune to the same heroes who helped him when he needed it most.

Ashton was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia when he was a child. It was a long and winding battle filled with all kinds of treatments—from chemo to radiation therapy and even a bone marrow transplant.

Ashton has been in remission for five wonderful years—the best outcome made possible largely through the support he received in his battle days.

Childhood Cancer Support Public Benefit Organisation Cupcakes of Hope supported Ashton through his treatment, as they do many South African children in similar situations. Their work helps fund the largely unaffordable cancer treatments little patients need, helping give each a fighting chance.

In a bid to give back and support other young people going through a fight Ashton knows well, he fundraised like a champion at Southcity Christian School and Southcity College.

To the team’s immense gratitude, Ashton’s Army ultimately raised R11,000 for Cupcakes of Hope!

“Ashton, your efforts are inspiring, and we can’t thank you enough for using your own journey to bring hope and love to others. Your actions remind us that small acts of kindness can truly make a world of difference.

Thank you for your support and for continuing to give hope to children fighting cancer. You’ve made a lasting impact, and we are so grateful for you!”—Cupcakes of Hope.
