Scott Hargrave held onto one dream: to become a doctor. Despite an impressive academic record, his path to medical school was paved with disheartening rejections. But he never gave up on the one thing he wanted most, and now, nearly a decade later, things are finally looking up.
Johannesburg, South Africa (08 May 2025) – All he has ever wanted was to become a doctor, and now, finally, after eight years of trying, Scott Hargrave was accepted into the Wits Graduate Entry Medical Programme at the start of this year.
The dream to touch lives through medicine was realised during his studies while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Human Genetics and Physiology.
“My first application was in 2016 while completing my Honours degree in Biomedical Oncology,” shared Scott.
“With the applications came the rejections, which were disappointing and disheartening despite fulfilling all the requirements, applying at multiple universities and throwing in a distinction for my Master’s degree, for good measure.”
However, even with his impressive academic history, Scott still struggled to get into med school.
Refusing to let his passion for healing die, he found another way to positively impact lives by pursuing a diploma in Therapeutic Massage and working as a massage therapist.
However, he is now studying towards his lifelong dream to become “Dr Scott Hargrave” – a dream in which he needs financial support in order to fulfil.
With fees estimated at R100,000 per year for three years, Scott launched a BackaBuddy campaign with hopes of receiving some help from the greater public toward covering the hefty cost.
“This is a lifelong dream of mine that I haven’t given up on, and the only way to make this dream a reality is by asking for help.
“Any contributions, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. I cannot express how grateful I am for this opportunity and the support,” Scott heartfeltly appealed.
