Despite her physical scars and trauma from a tragic dog attack last month, Avanya’s spirit remains unbreakable. The five-year-old proudly calls herself “as strong as a lion” with inspiring courage that has touched the hearts of many.
Thabazimbi, South Africa (16 September 2025) – Little Avanya Espag is described by those who have had the delight of knowing her as full of life, always laughing, and a born entertainer. However, this special girl, who lights up every room she walks into, sadly had her world turned upside down on 29 August in Thabazimbi.
That Friday, Avanya was tragically attacked by a large dog.
“The dog bit her face badly, leaving her with deep and very visible scars. What was once a little girl always ready to smile and perform is now a child who must face painful treatments, the trauma of the attack, and the fear of looking different,” explained her mother, Anja Espag.
The family was left heartbroken and longed for nothing more than to give Avanya the medical care she needed.
“But the costs are overwhelming and far beyond our reach,” shared Anja.
Not sure how else to move forward, the family launched a BackaBuddy campaign to help raise funds for the medical, reconstructive, psychological, emotional and educational support Avanya will need to heal and overcome this unforeseen challenge.

In a heartwarming turn of events, the response has been nothing short of amazing, as several donors have opened up their hearts and wallets to help this little girl, raising R70,591 in just 14 days.
“Her stitches were successfully removed within two weeks, and with the incredible support from BackaBuddy, we have been able to cover a number of medical visits as well as therapy sessions,” shares Anja.
Avanya may have been left physically scarred, but this brave heart prides herself on being as “strong as a lion.”
This five-year-old girl’s spirit continues to shine bright through every day, reminding us that even in the toughest times, courage and joy can lead the way.
Although the road to recovery is not finished, her family is thankful that their daughter is doing well and appreciates the support they have received from the public.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. Your kindness is not only helping with her healing, but also keeping her little lion-heart full of hope and happiness,” Anja shares.
