Against the odds of being born with a hearing impairment, Carla Franco is slowly but surely rising to a ‘name to know’ in the South African music scene. If you ask us, her song ‘BIG TALKER’ might just be the summer bop South Africa needed this winter.

Cape Town, South Africa (17 July 2024) — 28-year-old South African singer-songwriter Carla Franco’s career is slowly but surely making all kinds of electric waves in the music scene. After releasing her debut ‘Chapter 1’ in 2022, the musician with a penchant for emotive lyrics against backings of textured melodies has grown from strength to strength.

Carla’s career is underpinned by a striking sense of resilience. Born with a hearing impairment, Carla’s drive to kick any sense of limitation to the curb is a big part of what draws people to the artist. But, the self-described ‘deaf girl that writes songs and sings’ has a much bigger draw card in her playbook—she makes music you actually feel like listening to again.

In the cold of South Africa’s winter, Carla Franco’s song ‘BIG TALKER’ feels like the summer bop SA needed. With a rich warmth oozing from the singer’s voice and an almost nostalgic blend of bubbly guitar strings, it’s up to the listener to decide precisely what the song means for them.

According to the artist herself, “BIG TALKER has been intentionally written to be received in one of two ways: The first being the experience of a partner whose words and actions don’t align. The second being the heart rate inducing excitement that we have all felt at the beginning of a new and exciting romantic journey. It’s up to the listener to decide what BIG TALKER means to them.”

For Carla, the song’s creation was deeply organic.

“I had been sitting in my apartment in Cape Town and wanted to better understand what the ‘dots’ on my guitar neckline sounded like per string. In doing so, I started playing around with the bass riff that you will her throughout the single and the hook of ‘big talker, sweet talker.’ It really happened organically and usually pop songwriting does not arrive as organically for me. I suppose I had a muse and that reads throughout the single,” she adds.
