A mother with MND, burdened by mounting medical bills and the heartbreaking sale of her home, recently received some much-needed support that will make a meaningful difference as she bravely faces each day with the degenerative disease.

Gauteng, South Africa (13 April 2025) – Overwhelmed by an aggressive terminal illness, a weakening body and high medical bills that have forced her to sell her home, a glimmer of hope has finally found its way to Lesego Monnakgotla.

Described as a devoted mother and a woman of incredible strength, Lesego is currently facing Motor Neuron Disease (MND) – a condition that has tested her in ways that are quite hard for most to fathom.

Robbed of her independence due to MND, Lesego lives with her elderly mother, who herself battles chronic illness, and her 15-year-old daughter, Maia.

According to HotCares, the emotional and financial toll on this small family has been immense – from selling their home to cover medical expenses to navigating the daily challenges of a degenerative disease.

Bringing a sense of comfort and support to their adverse journey, HotCares provided Lesego with a hospital bed and a hoist (both to the value of up to R45,000) to ensure Lesego is as comfortable as possible.

Lesego’s daughter was also provided with online counselling sessions valued at up to R10,000 – helping her cope as she supports her mom through this journey.

“Moreover, we will fund a caregiver for the next three months (valued at R20,000), offering the family much-needed relief and consistent support,” HotCares said.

Not only is this act of generosity huge, but the comforting support will greatly help this family during an incredibly trying time.
