This Mandela Day, The Angel Network hopes to collect 6700 non-perishable food items to distribute to various food-based programmes in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg, South Africa (13 June 2022) – Nelson Mandela Day is drawing nearer, and there are many projects you can take part in, to give back. The Angel Network is collecting non-perishable food items with the hope of collecting a total of 6700 items.

The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009, recognising Mandela’s “values and his dedication to the service of humanity” and acknowledging his contribution “to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world”.

The celebration of this day aims to serve as a global call to action for people to “recognise their individual power to make an imprint and help change the world around them for the better”, says the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

There are several ways you can get involved in good causes; you can donate things, donate your time or donate your skills. Do this for 67 minutes; it is an easy-to-accomplish bit of good.

As mentioned above, the Angel Network hopes to collect 6700 non-perishable food items. The organisation has a network of smaller organisations they support, including soup kitchens, preschools and families in need. The items collected for their Mandela Day cause will go towards those causes.

“PLEASE help us collect 6 700 non-perishable food items (tinned food, rice, mielie meal, porridge, oil, spices, instant soup, pasta, lentils, samp and beans etc) in memory of the great Nelson Mandela. Drop-offs in Glenhazel and Morningside on Wednesdays and Fridays before 4 pm. Alternatively, please consider making a donation in his memory and we will buy food items with your donation.”

This year the Angel Network aims to collect 6700 items of food for those in need. If you would like to support the Angel Network in this initiative, you can find all the details below.
