Jenny Wimbush has a passion for saving the turtles, and as a 5-year-old, her contribution to doing so is by removing plastic from the environment and doing what’s just right!
Cape Town, South Africa – Last year Jenny Wimbush told her family she didn’t want balloons at her party because she was worried about the turtles. Now nearly a year later she has set her sights on a goal much more significant than just balloons.
She has been collecting plastic and sending it to the recycling centre, so it doesn’t end up in the ocean. Jenny’s goal is to collect 200 cubic metres of plastic, which totals a staggering 200,000kgs. To date, she has received 158 cubic metres of plastic. This means she needs 42 more cubic metres of plastic before her birthday at the end of May.
Jenny and her mom are based in the Southern Suburbs in Cape Town so anyone wanting to help them reach the goal can get in contact to arrange a drop-off. You can do so via Jenny’s Facebook page here. Below is a list of plastics they are accepting.
“Just a reminder of what we CAN take:
- Plastic bottles
- Yoghurt pots
- Ice cream tubs
- Plastic veg trays (NOT polystyrene)
- The wrappers from said trays (but NOT clingwrap)
- Shopping bags
- Hard items such as old plastic toys, buckets etc
- Pool covers
- Corex board
- Shampoo and other bottles used in the beauty industry
- Empty hth bottles (please just rinse them)
- And loads more….
The only stuff we CAN’T take is polystyrene, clingwrap and foil-lined packaging like crisp packets.”
Jenny sends all her plastic to the Owl Rescue Centre who processes it and converts it into Owl and Bat boxes. It takes about 22 cubic metres of plastic to build an owl box, so Jenny has almost helped to make ten boxes.
With children like Jenny in the world, we have a very bright looking future! Thank you for doing what is “just right” for South Africa, Jenny. You are setting a fine example for us all.
